UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BCDs

Choosing the right Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) can significantly improve your comfort, trim, and overall diving experience. Each design has advantages depending on your diving goals, experience level, and diving environment.

1. JACKET-STYLE BCD

The Jacket BCD is the most common style used by recreational divers and entry-level students.

Advantages:

Comfortable and familiar design
Excellent surface flotation
Easy to use and adjust
Multiple pockets for accessories
Ideal for training and recreational diving

Best For:

  • New divers
  • Vacation divers
  • Recreational diving
  • Warm-water diving

Considerations:

Because the air bladder wraps around the sides and chest, some divers may feel slightly squeezed when fully inflated.

2. WING-STYLE BCD

Wing-style BCDs place the air bladder entirely behind the diver.

Advantages:

Better horizontal trim underwater
Less drag while swimming
Greater freedom of movement
Improved streamlining

Best For:

  • Intermediate and advanced divers
  • Divers seeking better trim and efficiency
  • Recreational and technical diving

Considerations:

At the surface, beginners may need time to learn proper body positioning because the buoyancy is concentrated behind the diver.

WHICH BCD IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

There is no single "best" BCD—only the best BCD for your diving style.

  • Jacket BCD: Simplicity, comfort, and recreational diving.
  • Wing BCD: Better trim and underwater efficiency.

The most important factor is choosing equipment that matches your diving goals, training, and experience level.

Dive the system that supports the way you dive.
