SSI Explorers: The Perfect Introduction to the Underwater World for Kids

SSI Explorers is one of the most comprehensive children's programs in the scuba diving industry. It was created to introduce young adventurers to the underwater world in a safe, educational, and fun environment while developing skills that will prepare them for an Open Water certification when they are old enough.

The program is designed for children ages 6 to 11, although scuba diving activities using scuba equipment (Scuba Explorer) have a higher minimum age in accordance with SSI Training Standards.

 

 

What Is SSI Explorers?

SSI Explorers replaced the former Scuba Rangers program and offers much more than a simple scuba experience. Its goal is to help children become comfortable in the water while learning about water safety, ocean conservation, and a variety of aquatic activities.

The program builds confidence, encourages curiosity, and creates a lifelong appreciation for the underwater world.

The Five Explorer Adventures

 Blue Oceans Explorer

The first step of the program introduces children to the importance of protecting our oceans.

Kids learn about:

  • The importance of the world's oceans

  • The five oceans of the world

  • How to protect marine environments

  • Respect for marine life

This module helps develop environmental awareness from an early age.

 Snorkel Explorer

Children develop essential water skills, including:

  • Proper use of a mask, snorkel, and fins

  • Basic breathing techniques

  • Floating skills

  • Surface safety

  • Water confidence

This adventure provides the foundation for all future water activities.

 Scuba Explorer

Once children reach SSI's minimum age requirement, they can experience scuba diving in a swimming pool or other confined water environment under direct instructor supervision.

They learn:

  • How to breathe underwater

  • Proper regulator use

  • Basic buoyancy control

  • Underwater hand signals

  • Fundamental scuba safety rules

Every session is conducted under the direct supervision of a certified SSI Professional.

 Mermaid Explorer

Designed for children who dream of swimming like a mermaid.

Participants develop:

  • Monofin techniques

  • Coordination

  • Balance

  • Better body control

  • Increased confidence in the water

Freediving Explorer

An introduction to breath-hold diving in a safe, age-appropriate environment.

Children learn:

  • Basic breathing techniques

  • Relaxation skills

All activities are carefully supervised and conducted within SSI's youth standards.

Explorer Specialty Programs

After completing the core adventures, children can continue learning through more than 20 specialty programs, including:
