Summer Diving at Mermet Springs

Summer Diving at Mermet Springs

Mermet Springs is one of the premier inland dive destinations in the Midwest. During the summer months, it offers warm surface temperatures, excellent training opportunities, impressive underwater attractions, and surprisingly clear water.

Current summer conditions (late July) are approximately:

  • Surface: 87°F (31°C)
  • 15 ft: 73°F (23°C)
  • 20 ft: 71°F (22°C)
  • 45 ft: 56°F (13°C)
  • 85 ft: 51°F (11°C)
  • Visibility: 20–25+ feet throughout much of the quarry.

The Thermocline

One of the most noticeable characteristics of diving at Mermet Springs during the summer is the thermocline.

The sun warms the upper layer of water, while the deeper spring-fed water remains cold.

As you descend, you experience an abrupt temperature drop, often within just a few feet.

A typical summer profile looks like this:

  • Warm surface water
  • Comfortable temperatures above 20 feet
  • Rapid cooling around 25–40 feet
  • Cold water below 45 feet
  • Very cold water deeper than 80 feet

Many divers describe it as swimming through an invisible wall of cold water.

Better Visibility at Depth

An interesting effect of the thermocline is that visibility often improves below the warmer surface layer.

Surface water contains more suspended particles, algae, and biological activity during the summer.

Below the thermocline, the colder water is often cleaner and clearer, providing excellent conditions for exploring the deeper attractions.

Exposure Protection

Choosing the right exposure protection depends on your dive profile.

For shallow recreational dives:

  • 3 mm wetsuit
  • 5 mm wetsuit
  • Hood optional

For dives below 45 feet:

  • 7 mm wetsuit recommended
  • Hood strongly recommended
  • Gloves improve comfort during longer dives

For extended deep dives or multiple dives:

  • Dry suit offers the greatest comfort and thermal protection.

Stay Hydrated

Summer heat can be just as challenging as cold water.

Divers often spend hours outdoors assembling equipment before entering the water.

Proper hydration helps reduce fatigue and lowers the risk of heat-related problems.

Drink water before and after every dive.

Plan Your Dive

Mermet Springs offers attractions at many different depths, making dive planning especially important.

A good dive plan includes:

  • Maximum depth
  • Bottom time
  • Gas management
  • Navigation
  • Thermal protection
  • Emergency procedures

Proper planning allows divers to spend more time enjoying the attractions rather than cutting dives short because of the cold.

Why Divers Love Summer at Mermet Springs

Summer provides an excellent combination of:

  • Warm surface conditions
  • Comfortable entries and exits
  • Good underwater visibility
  • Numerous training platforms
  • Famous underwater attractions, including the Boeing 727, helicopters, buses, boats, and other submerged training structures.

Whether you're completing an Open Water course, practicing advanced skills, or simply enjoying a fun dive with friends, Mermet Springs offers one of the best freshwater diving experiences in the Midwest.

Remember: The surface may feel like summer, but below the thermocline, it can feel like an entirely different season. Understanding those changing conditions—and planning for them—is the key to a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable dive.
