Master Diver SSI Requirements
To earn the SSI Master Diver rating—the highest non-professional recognition in recreational diving, you must meet the following three core requirements:
- 50 Logged Dives: You must have at least 50 verified open water dives.
- 5 Specialty Certifications: You must complete a minimum of five SSI Specialty programs.
- Diver Stress & Rescue: This is a mandatory specialty.
- 4 Other Specialties: You can choose any four additional specialties to tailor your expertise (Deep Diving, Navigation, Enriched Air Nitrox, or Wreck Diving).
- Automatic Recognition: Unlike some other agencies, SSI automatically awards this rating once your 50th dive and final required specialty are logged in the MySSI system, with no additional application fee.
Prerequisites & Details
- Minimum Age: Generally, 12 or 15 years old, depending on the specific specialties chosen for the rating.
- Previous Certification: You must hold an Open Water Diver certification (SSI or equivalent) as a starting point.
- Cross-Over Credits: SSI typically allows up to two specialty certifications from other recognized agencies (like PADI or NAUI) to count toward the Master Diver requirement.
- React Right: To complete the mandatory Diver Stress & Rescue specialty, you must also have a valid React Right (First Aid/CPR/Oxygen Provider) certification.
Recognition Path
As you work toward Master Diver, you will automatically hit these intermediate recognition levels:
- Specialty Diver: 2 Specialties + 12 Dives.
- Advanced Open Water Diver: 4 Specialties + 24 Dives.
- Master Diver: 5 Specialties (including Stress & Rescue) + 50 Dives
